I’m back again with yet another Clemence skirt! This is the make-your-own-pattern skirt from Tilly Walnes’s fantastic Love at First Stitch book.
One of my learners on the dressmaking course I’m running was interested to see my Clemences, but of course I had given my first one to my sister, and the second, blue one, I just thought was a bit bland and not the most inspiring skirt ever. So I made a new one, sprinkled with multi-coloured polka dots – now this one really is an “I want one” skirt! Check it out!
[In case you’ve missed them, I have made version one in plain black, and version two in plain blue.]
The slipper boots finish the look off perfectly, don’t you think?
The waistband fits so snugly, it’s really comfortable to wear. I do feel like it’s a little short, which is odd because I used the same pattern pieces as my other two – but it’s not too bad.
The teeny gathers are so adorable!
I used a proper invisible foot for the first time to insert the zip (I’ve always previously inserted them with a regular zipper foot) and I have to admit it was dead easy and perfectly concealed. I may have been persuaded!
I slipstitched the waistband lining to the interior instead of stitching in the ditch like I did with the other two. Just to mix things up a bit. Plus I much prefer the finish.
But here’s the best thing – pockets! Oh, they’re amazing! Although with all the fullness of the skirt they’re quite hard to find!!
So, have I made enough Clemences now? Ummm no. I love this pattern! It’s just so pretty and easy to wear.
If you haven’t yet made one – why not?!
Beth x

Thank you, I rarely buy fabric specifically for a garment but this was one that I chose for the Clemence – and I think it was a very good choice! 🙂

They look fab on you, but for me I have small hips and no waist. If I wore one I think it would emphasise my waist and give me hips. I think I’d look like a weeble! 😀

Haha there’s nothing wrong with weebly hips! I think you should give it a try though – look how much more flattering your jumpsuit is turning out to be than you imagined!!

……because I don’t need all those gathers making me look even fatter! It’s lovely on you though, and beautifully made – love your bold choice of fabric!

Lovely Clemence and I like the contrasting waistband. I’ve made a few of these now but not with pockets – the perfect excuse to make another one!

Thank you! I wasn’t actually planning to do a contrast but I found that I didn’t have enough fabric – the skirt used almost exactly 1m. Buy I’m so happy I did make it contrasting because I really like it!
And you definitely need one with pockets!

Love it! Argh! Is there no end to additions to my sewing queue? It looks like its a one sitting skirt – how long does it take you to make it?

Haha 🙂 hmm well I guess it took me 2 or 3 short evenings, cutting included. You could do it in one sitting if you didn’t only do it an hour or two here and there. I did stitch in the ditch first and took it out to hand sew it instead so that took up the most time!

Handstitching the waistband creates a much nicer finish. Takes longer but I have come round to that realisation😃

This is so nice! I really love the fabric & pockets! I’m wanting to make another Clemence but I’m still not sure about my waistband If I put the waistband on my waist, my hips look huge!

Thank you! It does puff out over your hips! Maybe try it with more length?

Lovely Beth. Some people (though obviously not on here) have such an old-fashioned view of sewing that it’s great to show them a really ‘modern’ item to challenge their perceptions. Sure this will be great inspiration for your class 🙂

That’s a lovely skirt Beth. I can imagine Abi wanting one like it! She loves gathered comfy skirts. The material is great too, fun and colourful without being too loud. Sharon x
