I had a fun day yesterday! I took my girls to the Handmade Fair at Hampton Court. I was lucky and got a free ticket from someone giving one away because she didn’t need it… So I just had to pay for my 6 year old. Oh and the extortionate parking when we eventually got there after sitting in 40 minutes of veeeeerry slow moving traffic! Anyway let’s talk about the good stuff!
I was very brave or crazy to take my 2 daughters with me. I didn’t bother with any workshops as I envisaged that ending in disaster but I did book on to one ‘Super Theatre’ session which was Dawn O’Porter talking to Kirstie about lots of stuff from her new clothing line to breakdowns, and working mums to the fact that she doesn’t like doing TV. There’s not going to be another ‘This Old Thing’ series!
Oh my word, it was busy. There were loaaads of stalls. But I didn’t buy any fabric! Yes I think I deserve an award for that! There were several fabric stalls!
This is my little haul:
Plus one more thing that is for my mum so I can’t show it here in case she’s reading!! But it was something handmade. I feel I did OK with my little mission to support small businesses!
So there’s a print of a poem that’s spot on – I’ve been wanting something like ‘House Rules’ but this is probably nicer! And there’s the Agnes pattern! And two hair bobbles that S spent far too long choosing the colour she wanted! Now I have to make her a dress to match apparently so if anyone knows the fabric…?! And the colourful box is nail polish pens. I never buy things like this but this was immediately after I made my girls sit in the Super Theatre for 45 mins, which was “very very very very very very very very very boring” haha, so this was a treat!
The seller did give us both a quick demo!
We met Tilly Walnes, and my daughter was a little confused!! Tilly was happy to pose with somebody shorter than her!
We bought pasta for lunch. I liked the look of the stall.
Well looks aren’t everything. I’ll be honest, it wasn’t as nice as it should have been and we are pasta-loving people – we didn’t even finish the bowls! I thought I’d treat us instead of buying a picnic but should have just brought a packed lunch in hindsight. Ah well. And yeah there weren’t enough tables so we sat on the floor. Luckily the weather was gorgeous!
We did have tea and cake in the Mollie Makes café (whoops no pics) and I got 3 or 4 refills for £2 so that wasn’t bad! They had colouring in there and plenty of adults were doing it. Crazy how when someone says it’s OK for adults to colour then everyone is happy to do it!
I wanted to sit in this vintage café where these lovely ladies were singing, but that was packed. Little A had a good time dancing just outside though!
There was so much inspiration and beautiful things to buy.
I loved the work but this artist – I can’t remember her name but she was very talented in freehand embroidery and applique work.
Yep, I was attracted to the blue polka dots!
OK, last photo. We liked these little purses by “love from beth” hehe, nice name!
I will go again next year – but leave earlier, expecting to sit in traffic, and probably bring a picnic!!
Beth x
It looks really fun! Though I also hate how busy these places get – I’m off to Yarndale in Skipton this weekend and know that it’ll be jam packed. It kinda takes a bit of the fun out of it when you can’t actually move to see the stalls! I’m also jealous that you met Tilly, haha 🙂

I went on Saturday and had a fantastic time. Yes, there was a queue for parking but I thought £5.50 for the day was ok in London. I went with my mum and there was plenty of coffee and cake, really delicious raclette for lunch and lots to see. Wonderful weather, which helped a lot I’m sure. I also resisted the fabric (on the whole 🙂 ) but did manage to spend £60 on artisan gin which I wasn’t expecting. All Christmas presents though, so I don’t feel too guilty. Will go again next year as I think it’s a well thought out event. Variety of activities, ample parking, NICE TOILETS!, matting over the grass on busy areas, and I found there was a lot of seating, and undercover.

I paid £8 to park! And couldn’t park in the parking right next to the venue. Yes it is good for a day in London though. A very well planned event, yes – only they need even bigger tents! I think we ate at the wrong time. I even stood to drink my cuppa! Haha yes the toilets were nice! Oh yes I did like the walkways over the grass, especially with a buggy. Thanks for your review. 🙂

It looks like you had a lovely day. I wish I had been able to go but it was probably for the best – I would have bought fabric!! 😉

I was there too- I can’t believe we missed each – I would have loved to meet you and the girls! I also resisted fabric buying- I don’t know how either but had a ball. Next time we should make a plan to grab a cuppa together! Xox Gabby

It looks like a lot of fun! Now if only Kirstie could be tempted to take the Handmade Fair on a tour to Australia…

Ah…I’m just a little bit jealous! I wish I’d been there. Looks like you had a good time. I’m not sure I could have resisted the fabrics though!

Aw sorry! I almost cracked but it was just SO busy that I couldn’t be bothered and my youngest was playing hide and seek around the shelving at the stall I almost cracked at so she was stressing me out! I must thank her for that haha!

I know, your recent posts may have helped! I really do have an awful lot at home that’s been sat for ages because I’m not even dressmaking at the moment!

🙂 Good to have a break now and then, you’ll get back into it when you’re ready…

The artist who did the embroidered bicycle is Katie Essam, the same one whose welly pictures we loved that I blogged about the other day. We’re hoping to do one of her workshops. Glad you enjoyed the fair too, but can’t believe you didn’t buy any fabric!

Oh yes of course it’s the same. I loved the welly pictures. She was busy speaking about her workshops to people when I was looking! Haha you’d better believe it!!

Wish I could have gone too – looks great. Can’t believe you didn’t buy any fabric – amazing! The singers in the vintage tea tent were The Haywood Sisters, and my friend Carla was singing with them on one of the days (I’m not sure which) – they’re great fun.

I really enjoyed reading your visit report. I had been quite envious of everyone’s instagram snaps of what looked like a fabulous day out with EVERYONE you’ve ever heard of in attendance. Made me quite homesick for London!

It sounds great Beth. I love the blue polka dot bits, very you!! It sounds as though girls weren’t too bored, it will be lovely in a few years when they can really appreciate it, probably a bit more expensive too!! x

Yeah they were fine, they just didn’t like the talk haha. They liked looking at the stalls and getting in people’s way!

We went on Saturday absolutely love Kirstie Allsopp!
I was so tempted to buy some of that gorgeous Polish pottery but I behaved haha.
Don’t you think that it was all too crammed in? I felt every time I wanted to look at anything it had to be at warp speed so I didn’t block everyone behind me or I was trying to walk down the aisles and I was constantly bumping into people.
All in all loved it and I think we will also be back next year. Thanks for blogging about it 🙂

Did you get to chat/have a photo with her? I didn’t see her besides in the theatre tent! I swiftly moved away from the pottery for fear of a child breaking it so that was good for my purse lol! Oh it was so crammed. I had a pushchair too!! I didn’t look at everything because it was so crowded 😦 I heard that it was worse last year!!

Wow how could it be worse!
We got quite close she was in the bloggers tent when we arrived and happened to be passing at the right time. Couldn’t get to talk to her but I did enter a competition to have afternoon tea at her house 😁
